Table of contents

In the world of 3D printing, the quality and conformity of the materials used are essential to guarantee reliable and safe results. Recently, our FME Rose PLA filament was approved as PMUC by EDF, but what does this approval really mean?

In this article, we will explain what this certification consists of and why it is important.

What are PMUCs?

PMUC stands for Products and Materials Usable in Plants (Centrales).
EDF is the exclusive owner of the PMUC brand and is the only entity authorized to certify PMUC products.

PMUCs are non-metallic products and materials used for maintenance, control, and operation activities in nuclear power plants.
The use of PMUCs is required in case of direct contact with metallic materials or circuits classified as important for safety and/or fluids transported by these circuits. These materials must therefore not have a corrosive action on these circuits or represent a danger from a toxicological point of view. PMUCs are therefore designed to meet the requirements and specificities of nuclear power plants.

What is PMUC approval?

In order to obtain PMUC approval, chemical analyses must be carried out in a laboratory approved by EDF. These analyses evaluate the content of halogens (fluorine, chlorine, and bromine) and sulfur, as these elements can, under certain conditions, cause various forms of corrosion of metal alloys and could endanger nuclear installations at the heart of power plants.

In addition, these materials must be free of prohibited materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic, antimony, copper, etc.

Once the analyses have been carried out, the supplier sends its documents to EDF for examination. If the opinion is favorable, EDF issues PMUC approval, valid only for the product indicated on the PMUC form.

What are the PMUC requirements?

The supplier is committed to ensuring the quality and safety of its product throughout its manufacture.

All PMUC-approved products will be accompanied by a certificate guaranteeing the product's chemical compliance with PMUC requirements, as well as a batch number and a use-by date ensuring optimal product properties.

PMUC approval is granted for a period of five years and must be updated before expiry.

Conclusion

PMUC approval is an essential step in ensuring the safety and reliability of nuclear facilities. By complying with the stringent standards established by EDF, PMUC-approved products help prevent the risk of corrosion and ensure the proper functioning of nuclear power plants.
