In the world of 3D printing, the quality and conformity of the materials used are essential to guarantee reliable and safe results. Recently, our PLA Rose FME filament was PMUC approved by EDF, but what does this approval really mean?
In this article, we'll explain what this certification is and why it's important.
What are PMUCs?
PMUC stands for Produits et Matériaux Utilisables en Centrales.
EDF is the exclusive owner of the PMUC brand and is the only company authorized to sell PMUC products.
PMUCs are non-metallic products and materials used for maintenance, control and operating activities in nuclear power plants.
The use of PMUCs is required in the event of direct contact with metallic materials or circuits classified as important to safety and/or fluids transported by these circuits. These materials must not have a corrosive action on these circuits, or represent a toxicological hazard. PMUCs are designed to meet the specific requirements of nuclear power plants.
What is PMUC certification?
In order to obtain PMUC certification, chemical analyses must be carried out in a laboratory approved by EDF. These analyses assess the halogen (fluorine, chlorine and bromine) and sulfur content, as these elements can under certain conditions cause various forms of corrosion in metal alloys, and could endanger nuclear installations at the heart of power plants.
In addition, these materials must be free of prohibited materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic, antimony, copper, etc.
Once the analyses have been carried out, the supplier forwards his documents to EDF for examination. In the event of a positive opinion, EDF issues the PMUC approval, valid only for the product indicated on the PMUC sheet.
What are PMUC's requirements?
The supplier undertakes to guarantee the quality and safety of its product throughout the manufacturing process.
All PMUC-approved products will be accompanied by a certificate guaranteeing the product's chemical compliance with PMUC requirements, as well as a batch number and an expiration date guaranteeing the product's optimum properties.
PMUC certification is issued for a period of five years, and must be updated before expiry.
Conclusion
PMUC certification is an essential step in guaranteeing the safety and reliability of nuclear facilities. By complying with the rigorous standards set by EDF, PMUC-certified products help prevent the risk of corrosion and ensure the smooth operation of nuclear power plants.
